The Saccavibhaṅga Sutta Sutta of the Discrimination of Truth. Like this I hear. At one time, the Blessed One was staying at Bārāṇāsī (Paradise), Isipatana (place of the deities), at Migadaya (Lockey). There, the World-Honored One called the bhikkhus: "Monks." "White World Honored One". Those bhikkhus obeyed the Blessed One. The Blessed One said as follows —The wheel of unsurpassed Dharma was transported by the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, in the Deer Park, the place of the Devas, in Benares. No recluse, brahmin, deva, demon king, brahma, or anyone else in the world can stop or reverse the movement, that is, the teaching, the preaching, the construction, the establishment, expand, distinguish, manifest the four Noble Truths. how is four? The revelation, the declaration, the poem, the establishment, the expansion, the distinction, and the manifestation of the Noble Truth of Suffering; the teaching, the preaching ... about the Noble Truth of Suffering; the declaration, the preaching ... about the Noble Truth of Suffering; the revelation, the declaration ... about the Noble Truth of Suffering. The unsurpassed wheel of Dharma, bhikkhus, has been transported by the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, in the Deer Park, the place of the Devas, in the Paranita. No recluse, brahmin... or anyone in the world can stop or reverse the movement, that is, the opening, declaring, constructing, establishing, expanding, distinguishing, and manifesting. Four Noble Truths. O Male-stilts, stay close to Sāriputta and Moggallāna, O Male-stilts, stay close to Sāriputta and Moggallāna; they are wise bhikkhus (pandita), who are the followers of the holy life. As a mother-born, bhikkhus, so is Sāriputta! Like a nursing model, such is Moggalana! Monks, Sāriputta leads to stream-entry, and Moggallāna leads to the ultimate meaning. Sāriputta, bhikkhu, can teach, preach, compose, establish, widen, discriminatively manifest the four Noble Truths. Thus said the Blessed One; Having said this, Thien Thea got up from his seat and entered the monastery. There, the venerable Sāriputta, not long after the Blessed One had gone, immediately called to the bhikkhus: "O sages." "Yes, sage." Those bhikkhus obeyed Venerable Sāriputta. Venerable Sāriputta said as follows —The Blessed One, the Unsurpassed Dharma Wheel was transported by the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One in the Deer Park, the place of the Devas, at the Paranita... the revelation, declare, construct, establish, expand, distinguish, and manifest the Noble Truth of Suffering and the cessation of suffering. And what, friends, is the Noble Truth of Suffering? Birth is suffering, old age is suffering, (sickness is suffering), death is suffering, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, grief, and pain are suffering; not asking is suffering. In short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. Hey, Hien, what is birth? Hey, Hien, what is old age? Each class of living beings, in each precept, age, decay, loss of teeth, gray hair, wrinkled skin, shortened life span, and destruction of the faculties. I hope I don't have to go to a waterfall." That wish was not fulfilled. This is called the unwholesome request. Dear friends, sentient beings are afflicted by old age... sentient beings are afflicted by illness... overwhelmed by sorrow, lamentation, suffering, grief, and brains!" May I not be subject to sorrow, lamentation, suffering, and grief!" That wish was not fulfilled. This is called the unwholesome request. How is it, in a nutshell, that the five aggregates of clinging are suffering? Such as the aggregate of form clinging, the aggregate of feeling clinging, the aggregate of perception clinging to the aggregate, the aggregate of formations clinging to the aggregate, the aggregate of consciousness clinging to the aggregate. This, friends, is called in short, the five aggregates of clinging are suffering. What, dear friends, is the Noble Truth of Suffering? Craving leads to rebirth, friends with joy and greed, seek joy here and there; like lust, love, and non-being. This, friends, is called the Noble Truth of Suffering. And what, dear friends, is the Noble Truth of Suffering? The cessation of that craving, the renunciation, the equanimity, the liberation, the immaculate (that craving). This, friends, is called the Noble Truth of Suffering. What, dear friends, is the Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering? That is the Noble Eightfold Path, that is, right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. This, monks, is called right livelihood. And what, dear friends, is right effort? For the evil, unwholesome France has arisen, the desire to eradicate; This person makes effort, diligence, determination, perseverance. As for the unborn kusalas, arousing the will to cause arising; This person makes effort, diligence, determination, perseverance. For the kusala dharmas that have arisen, arise the will to make abiding, not to perish, to make growth, development, and perfection; This person makes effort, diligence, determination, perseverance. This, monks, is called right effort. Hey friends, what is mindfulness? Here, monks, a bhikkhu lives contemplating the body on the body, ardent, aware, mindful, in order to overcome covetousness and grief in the world... Dharma, enthusiasm, awareness, mindfulness, to overcome greed and grief in the world. This, friends, is called mindfulness. Hey, Hien, what is right concentration? Here, friends, a bhikkhu is separated from sensual pleasures, away from evil and unwholesome dharmas, and attains and abides in the first jhāna, a state of bliss born of detachment from sensual pleasures, with application and with four. That bhikkhu has ceased to seek, has ceased to be, witness and stay in the second Zen, a state of bliss born of concentration, without search, without four, with one-pointed inner calm. The bhikkhu-stilts rejoicing and remaining in equanimity, being mindful, fully aware, and feeling the pleasure of life, which the Noble Ones call equanimity of mindfulness, happiness, and abiding in the third Zen. That bhikkhu releases pleasure, relieves suffering, destroys joy and grief, which he has felt before, attains and abides in the fourth jhāna, free from pain, without pleasure, with pure mindfulness. This, monks, is called right concentration. This, friends, is called the Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering.
